ico-D is pleased to announce to all Members and our Community that the ico-D 27 General Assembly (27 GA) and the ico-D Platform Meetings will take place in October 2017 in Montréal, Canada. The events will be held in conjunction with The World Design Summit.

This year, the Pasadena Prof/Promo and Edu Platform Meetings 2016 were held at the stunning venue: ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California and tackled the issues of National Design Policy, Membership, Raising Professional Standards and Curriculum Development among other workshops, discussion forums and roundtables.

in memoriam

ico-D regrets to announce the passing of former Icograda President Giancarlo Iliprandi (Milan, Italy 15 March 1925–15 September 2016). Mr. Iliprandi was President of Icograda from 1991–1993, serving as President Elect from 1989–1991 and Vice President from 1987–1989. Born 15 March 1925, Iliprandi was one of Italy's leading graphic artists who dedicated over fifty years to an international legacy of graphic design and visual communication.

ico-D’s research journal: Communication Design: Interdisciplinary and Graphic Design Research is issuing a call for papers: Special Issue Volume 5(2): Expanded Practices in Communication Design, Research and Education and an Open Call for future issues.

Founded in 1970 as the “College for Fashion and Textile Technology,” new ico-D Member Shenkar College of Engineering, Design and Art has a rich history based in the textile industry in Israel as well as a current design programme that is cutting-edge multidisciplinary.

swedish members advocate for better social insurance policy for visual creators

The impact of freelance artists and designers getting fair access to social insurance could be ground-breaking. Recently, ico-D Member Svenska Tecknare, along with other representatives of the visual artists and designers in Sweden, published an article in the Swedish daily newspaper by Dagens Nyheter, calling for an extended inquiry by the Social Insurance Commission concerning the creative sector and social security benefits.

Bridging the gap from being a Student of Design to being a Professional Designer can be a difficult path. Rebecca Blake of ico-D Member Graphic Artists Guild talks about the benefits of joining a professional design association and how they can help you avoid many of the pitfalls that many young designers fall into. "Be professional. Join a Professional Design Association." is the next in a series of stories about ico-D's partnership with Adobe to advance student careers.

ico-D programmes

Organised by ico-D and the Sichuan Economic and Information Committee (SEIC), two ico-D educational Members, Chengdu University of Technology (China) and Shenkar College of Engineering, Design and Art (Israel) have launched an exchange aimed at supporting Chinese designers and Chinese design universities. The goal is to help the Chinese industry better understand how to best furnish socially conscious design in the future, and the project will act as a model for expanding to additional Chinese cities.
