Montreal Design Declaration 2017

On 24 October 2017, the Montréal Design Declaration was signed by eighteen international organisations, representing more than a million practitioners. The Montréal Design Declaration is an historic milestone for the international design community. For the first time, the international organisations representing designers, architects, planners and landscape architects are speaking with one voice, outlining the potential of design to address important challenges facing humanity and issuing a joint call to action.

Icographic

Ahead of its time: the third issue of Icographic (1972), ico-D's first research journal, includes articles on Japanese typography, Penguin paperbacks, and a new Hebrew sans serif for bilingual printing.

On 16 October 2017 at 27GA Montréal, the 2017–2019 Executive Board was voted in by ico-D Members present—49 Members from 18 countries.

ico-D hosted a Special Meeting this year at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (Musée des Beaux Arts de Montréal) to foster knowledge sharing and networking between Design Weeks, Biennales, Cities and Museums from all over the world.

Attended by over fifty Member representatives, Platform Topics and Discussion Forums kickstarted two lively day of knowledge sharing and #deeplistening on our Members’ most important design issues: Accreditation/Certification, Indigenous design—International Indigenous Design Charter, Lifelong Learning, National Design Policies (NDPs), Member Forums talks and set the stage for upcoming regional meetings in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and in Beijing (China) 2018.

This year’s Achievement Award winners include Louise St. Pierre, Associate Professor of Design at Emily Carr University of Art and Design; Rod McDonald, CGD, FGDC and world-renowned Canadian typographer; and Pierre Léonard, Partner, Vice President and Creative Director, BrandBourg.

The ico-D President's Award winners are ico-D International Partners for the World Design Summit Meeting and fellow Steering Committee members: Kathryn Moore, President of IFLA, and Regitze Marianne Hess, Special Advisor to IFHP.
